Addiction or Relaxation ??

The following is a quote from an internal Philip Morris memo from 1970 on the tobacco industry’s brand ethos: “We are in the business of relaxing people who are tense and providing a pick up for people who are bored or depressed.  The human needs that our product fills will not go away.  Thus, the only real threat to our business is that society will find other means of satisfying those needs.”

What are your thoughts?  Are big companies fulfilling a need for relaxation and a relief for boredom, or are they fueling an unhealthy and dangerous addictions?

Furthermore, how have social media companies stepped in, to fill those same needs and voids?  Has social media become the latest addiction to pass the time, feel connected, and get your "fix" in today's world?  Read this article on what happens when you take a social media purge...

Two Great Reads

Check out this article ... Turns out Millennials are sober spenders compared to their predecessors. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, being 30 today is a lot harder in some ways than it was just a few decades ago.  Sure, today's 30-somethings may get flack for overpriced coffees, a slow breakdown in communication due to electronics, and a predilection for fancy toasts, but it's not all fun and games...

Go deeper: explore the differences between being 30 today and 30 years ago

Food for Thought:

"I have a theory that children
remember two things --
when you weren't there
and when they threw up."

Diversity:

Susan Lyne, past president of ABC Entertainment, and current president and founder of BBG, states:

"The best companies are the ones that have truly diverse teams. I don’t think the ultimate goal is to have all-female teams or for every start-up to be female-led. When you have too many people who look alike and think alike, you’re less likely to explore every side of an issue before you make a decision. I’ve seen that many, many times. I’ve seen it in companies that are predominantly male, and in ones like Martha Stewart that are predominantly female. There are things that make women better leaders and things that make men better leaders, and the ultimate goal should be finding a way for teams to be truly integrated.
Age diversity is also valuable. Anytime you get too many people working together who have the same background, same race, same gender, same education, who are of the same generation, use the same thought process, you can end up making mistakes because there aren’t enough people in the room who’re going to offer a different opinion. My partner at BBG Ventures is thirty years younger than I am, and it’s one of the reasons we make a good team."

Make Great Habits:

1. Take yourself seriously. (if you don't, why would anyone else?)
Your life, career, health, family, finances, relationships, education, hobbies and interests, ...the list goes on and on.

2. Make everything you do worth the time.
Do things right the first time.  Why waste time and energy repeating everything?

3. There is always room for improvement. (aka - don't expect to win every time).
Search for ways to continually better yourself and your situation.  Make the decision to improve.  Repeat this often so that it becomes a habit, and a natural part of your thought processes.
