Here's an
interesting article about the future of shopping malls. No longer considered an easy place to do all your holiday shopping at one time, or a local spot to hang out with friends when you're bored...today's shopping mall has to be Bigger, be Better, and continue to offer More, More, More...
More people than ever are choosing to forgo the traditional mall experience, and instead shop online from the convenience of their couch (or bed). Retail spaces are taking a hit. Once big-name brands like Sears and Toys-R-Us have watched their profits dry up and have closed their doors.
So, companies have to get creative. And that's where Turkish developer Yaromir Steiner comes in.
"Twenty years ago, malls were conduits for delivering goods ... now, it's about selling experiences."
— Yaromir Steiner
Steiner wants to create a mall where you can live, play, shop, and work. It sounds risky. It sounds like a small town within the parameters of what used to be a "mall" (!). It sounds creative. But does it sound like it will work? Only time - and consumer dollars - will tell.
